The HKMSS held its 14th Annual Scientific Meeting as part of the 9th Hong Kong Neurological Congress, which was co-organized with the Hong Kong Neurological Society. The event took place at the JW Marriott Hong Kong.

This year, we were honored to have two prominent overseas speakers. The first was Prof. Mar Tintore from the Multiple Sclerosis Centre of Catalonia (CEMCAT), Barcelona, who was the immediate past president of ECTRIMS. The second was Prof. Kazuo Fujihara from the Fukushima Medical University School of Medicine, Japan, who was a dear friend and mentor to many of us in the HKMSS.

Smouldering-associated worsening in multiple sclerosis and the importance of using high efficacy treatment in early multiple sclerosis

In the first talk by Prof. Tintore, she essentially walked everyone through the entire ECTRIMS 2025, and gave us a comprehensive review on all the key aspects of MS care with their latest updates. She first focused on the changes in updated McDonald criteria which would impact clinical practice, followed by the increasingly recognized concept of PIRA (progression irrespective of relapse activity). She then touched on the latest data on high efficacy treatment, and finished her talk with the new MS treatment options that are under study.

On the day prior to the MS symposium, Prof. Tintore also had a small group discussion with our council and invited guests on ‘Impacts of the Updated McDonald Criteria’ and ‘Risk Stratification of MS Patients and Role of Biomarker in Disease Prognosis’.

Personalising multiple sclerosis therapy: Guidelines, treatment selection and risk mitigation

In the second talk by Prof. Fujihara in the MS symposium, he utilized the stage set by Prof. Tintore, and dove deeper into how the latest McDonald criteria should be used in a personalized approach in everyday practice, taking into account the individual patient’s age, risk appetite, and comorbidities. He also shared with us the Japanese Clinical Practice Guidelines of Multiple Sclerosis and Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder, which diagnostic criteria also recently underwent an update.

We are certain that everyone in the audience enjoyed the two enlightening and heartwarming sessions by our speakers, who were also good friends with each other. The HKMSS was most honored that Prof. Tintore has agreed to be our society’s honorary fellow, along the Prof. Fujihara who has been our honorary fellow for a decade!

We would like to thank both Prof. Tintore and Prof. Fujihara for their wonderful talk, and everyone who attended the sessions!
