World MS Day Event

World MS Day 2021: 世界多發性硬化症關懷及教育日

29 May 2021

YMCA of Hong Kong Beacon Centre Lifelong Learning Institute

To commemorate World MS Day 2021, the HKMSS has collaborated with the Hong Kong Neuromuscular Disease Association to organize an event named ‘世界多發性硬化症關懷及教育日’ on 29 May 2021.

The World MS Day theme was #MSConnections for the years 2020 to 2022. Although there were still limitations on gatherings due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, we still wished to echo the theme of ‘connections’ and thus decided to hold the event in a hybrid format, broadcasting real-time online via Facebook Live but also had some patients and caretakers attend in person at the YMCA of Hong Kong Beacon Centre Lifelong Learning Institute.

Patient talks and sharing

After an opening speech by Mr. Yan, the chairman of the HKNMDA, our immediate past president Dr. Richard Li gave a talk titled ‘治療方案面面觀’, briefly introducing the basics of multiple sclerosis, followed by an update of the latest disease modifying therapies. Our past president Dr. Winnie Wong then gave a talk titled ‘預備懷孕你要知’, answering the queries of many female MS patients who were contemplating on pregnancy. After a Q&A section from the floor and facebook live audience, MS patient Finny also gave a sharing on her personal journey with the disease.

VR Videos

For this year’s World MS Day, two VR videos were specially made in collaboration with the HKNMDA. The first one, titled ‘患友日常’, allows caretakers and the public to experience first-hand how to feels to be an individual with multiple sclerosis. Using VR technology, viewers can hopefully understand the symptoms that arise for MS patients on a daily basis.

The second one, titled ‘自由飛翔’, brings more hope to both MS patients and caretakers, allowing them to soar through the skies in virtual reality when travelling is heavily impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A card-box VR visor has been distributed to participants, and the video ‘自由飛翔’ was played to conclude the event.

We hope that our participants enjoyed this event, and we would like to thank HKNMDA for co-organizing this event.
